Madewell and Tony Camaro have partnered to deliver us a capsule collection of graphic tees that is truly something special. The NY based denim company enlisted the talents of Los Angeles’s very own Tony Camaro for an exclusive collaboration, producing three 100% cotton t-shirts all donning original illustrations from Camaro, pictured below.
Tony Camaro is exceptional. Born and raised in LA, the 27-year-old creative has built an impressive career and reputation for himself over the past years. Pookie got to chat with Tony Camaro about his new collaboration with Madewell and his artistry, read this interaction below.
POOKIE: What does this collaboration with Madewell mean to you? How did this come about?
TONY CAMARO: This collaboration showed me that being your true authentic self is one of the most important aspects to being a human - especially when it gets carried over into a more corporate / retail space in the field of art (fashion, selling project etc). People can tell when you are real and when you are fake, and everyone else is taken, so you just gotta be true to yourself. It meant a lot for a brand as large as Madewell to recognize that - in not just me but anyone. It also proves once again that anything is possible you just gotta work for it.
The collaboration came about pretty organically - someone from their team had been following my work for a while and saw the progression to the point where they pitched me for the madewell artist series - we started talking about 7 months ago, came up with the designs that worked well with their brand, etc etc and boom - madewell x tony collab.
POOKIE: Where do you find inspiration?
TONY CAMARO: I find inspiration everywhere. I'm constantly looking at images online - fashion, art, architecture, design, pottery. Everything has beauty, everything is inspiring. Books ! There is a book for just about anything you can think of. Alone time is healthy, I think a lot when I'm alone, just of ideas - allowing yourself to think and to not hold back, even when it's a bad idea - just see it through and learn and grow and challenge yourself constantly. All of that is inspiring.
POOKIE: What is the most important aspect of being an artist to you?
TONY CAMARO: The most important aspect of being an artist is knowing yourself. Truly knowing who you are. Getting rid of ego, of negativity, of competition. You need to break yourself down and build yourself back up. It is so important to stay healthy, constantly question everything, and to always learn. Never be afraid of failure, and never give up. Seeing things through is so important. It is a very slow burn - trust the process, and check in with yourself - tighten up the screws. Take accountability. Be real, never hold back.
POOKIE: You’re born and raised in Los Angeles, how would you say this city has shaped you?
TONY CAMARO: LA has treated me with love. It’s like a play ground for big kids. Such rich culture and history, food, all walks of life. It was amazing growing up in LA and just exploring everywhere. So many different music scenes, groups of people, places to go - it’s all so beautiful and I am so lucky to have been born here. Of all of the places in the world, we are so lucky to have our health and to call this place home.
