Paco has ascended. The Los Angeles based musician released his debut EP “CUATRO” three days ago, and now that Pookie has fully digested this remarkable record, we’re here to break it down for you. Listen to “CUATRO”, the debut EP from Paco here.
Paco has been one of Pookie’s favorite artists from the beginning, and this EP is something I have been eagerly awaiting. An experimental genius, Paco is known for intermingling alt. pop, R&B, punk, and latin american influences. Originally from St. Louis, the 20 year old musician has been getting silly all across Hollywood for the past year, and making some serious musical gains while he’s at it. He’s amassed hundreds of thousands of streams across his catalog, and has maintained a loyal and ever-growing monthly listener base. Today, Pookie is stoked to give you our takes on each awesome track off “CUATRO”, the newly released EP from Paco.
- "SILK" (with Shy High)
Written by Paco & Shy High, this song starts off gently. Produced by Jake Culbertson, latinesque guitar chords matched with Paco’s suave Spanish vocal lure the listener’s ear closer, que drums and percussion, we’re sonically locked in. Perfectly placed xylophone and bongo motifs in the production also contribute to the overall breeziness of this track. “SILK” is ideally listened to in a warm climate, near a body of water, hopefully in conjunction with other attractive humans. Shy High (also a Pookie Favorite) enters for the chorus, bringing with him some much appreciated alternative grittiness, wonderfully complimenting Paco’s innate smoothness. In scope of the whole record, “SILK” is definitely the perfect choice to start the EP.
- "FOGGY" (with Tommy Richman)
"FOGGY” is an awesomely bizarre funhouse of a track. Think hip hop inspired drums, hypnotically twanged competing guitars, an actively funky bassline, loads of sweet embellishments, and most importantly the spectacular combined vocals of Paco and Tommy Richman. This song is a perfect display of Paco’s experimental wizardry. “FOGGY”, produced by Jake Culbertson and Maverick Fabela, hits the listener from every side with fascinating noises, enthralling our ears in a complex and very satisfying soundscape. Paco and Tommy Richman killed this completely, their artistic styles compliment each other perfectly.
- "2PM"
This may be my favorite song off the project. First off, the sound byte that opens this track is iconic, and will immediately put you in your rightful place. "2PM" by Paco is a celestial combination of cosmic synths, pads, and UK garage inspired drums. The production makes you feel like you're in an intergalactic high speed chase, whizzing through asteroid belts whilst being chased by rogue space agents, all while maintaining an undeniable smoothness. Lyrically, Paco is requesting honesty & transparency from a potential love interest, the opening chorus reads "say what you mean if you're feeling me / why you make a scene if you're feeling me?" This track gets better every single time, and if you choose to listen at exactly 2PM a magical genie will appear to grant you three wishes. Use Them Wisely.
- "SUPERSONIC"
The fourth and final track, "SUPERSONIC", is the perfect embodiment of Paco's artistry. Written and produced by Paco and Jake Culbertson, this track utilizes a heavy bass drum, ominous electric guitars, and a heavily distorted punk vocal to deliver his signature alt. punk wave pop sound. The vibe of "SUPERSONIC" is upbeat yet jaded, lyrically this song explores an unstable relationship that Paco is experiencing, as seen in lyrics "it's that type of love that makes you say 'man what the fuck'" and "maybe we can find the answer if we just split apart". 10/10, a dope ending to an amazing EP.
