DWY DOES IT AGAIN: “BADU FEELS” IS A WORK OF ART

Updated: Aug 1, 2022

The London-raised multi instrumentalist releases his second single of the year, a wonderfully composed piece called “Badu Feels”. Vulnerable, soulful, and warm, be kind to yourself and give this track a listen.

Life can be incredibly stressful, as we all know. We experience feelings of defeat, tiredness, fatigue. Oftentimes we look towards the future, ruminating on our dreams and familiar joys to get us through the harder parts of life. “Badu Feels”, the latest single from South London creative DWY, is comfortably crafted and beautifully relatable.

The track is stunning to the ear (not surprising since it’s DWY we're talking about), and lyrically the artist goes into an introspective state, focusing on the distant Summer as an escape from the self-doubt and uncertainty he feels in the present. The production is simplistic and sophisticated, putting an emphasis on the importance of details. DWY’s voice is soul-touching, with his impressive falsetto serving as the gateway to cathartic release. Add to the mix a couple of acoustic guitars, an organically laid-back drum arrangement, and a bass with a lowend that hits like a weighted blanket for your mind, “Badu Feels” is truly a work of art. The chorus is the perfect culmination of sounds and emotion, with the appearance of a heaven-sent string instrument that pairs perfectly with the artist’s soaring vocal. The electric guitar cameo in the bridge section is another personal Pookie favorite. At the end of the track, an audio excerpt plays of a friend’s comment on the project: “Bro Badu Feels is an incredible record bro, you should see that through. Real shit. That shit was wild.” I completely agree.

DWY, the Miami-born but South London raised creative, who holds close his Jamaican and West African roots, is one of Pookie’s recent favorite discoveries. I first was introduced to the artist via his single “Solid Gold”, released earlier in 2022 and equally impressive to the ear. His experience with music began at 16 while trying to fit in at university. Instantly, he knew he was onto something special. Listing Marvin Gaye, Frank Ocean, early Kanye, Quentin Tarantino and the Fugees as his biggest inspirations, it’s no wonder the product of his creativity is so captivating. Currently based in LA, DWY is among us making magic, and I’d advise you to keep your eyes peeled on what he does next.
