Miloe, the Minneapolis based 21-year-old rising star, and LA’s very own coveted gem PawPaw Rod have joined forces for “rewind”, a wonderfully dynamic indie pop track about embracing difficult interpersonal experiences.
“We were strong when we were young, I could stare into the sun”, these are the opening lyrics of “rewind”, the fresh new collaborative record by Miloe and PawPaw Rod. Miloe, known as Bobby Kabeya by family and friends, is just twenty-one and quickly gaining recognition for his musical craftsmanship. Merging influences of his DRC heritage with sounds he’s discovered while residing in Minnesota, the artist creates rich, zestful tracks for his some 300,000 faithful monthly listeners. His scintillating new ep “gaps”, co-produced by Lars Stalfors, released yesterday, and the burgeoning young artist partnered with none other than PawPaw Rod for the final track of this project.
“How lonesome you would be, how lonesome you could be in my care”, Miloe croons, as he reminisces over the memory of an ex-love. Growing pains from relationships in your twenties are painful but necessary, as we all are finding out. About the creation of “rewind”, Miloe shared, “I started with the chords and lead melody for a while, trying to find a new place to take the song. There were probably four attempts to finish this song, but the magic happened when PawPaw Rod came to town to see Prince’s home and laid down his verse. I finished it in LA with Lars. It was a blast to record drums for this song. I think this song is me kinda accepting a breakup and other painful interpersonal experiences and embracing change.”
The track is centered around Miloe’s warm, layered vocal, matched with the playful twang of acoustic guitars and a bright, emotive drum beat in which I could feel the Congolese influence pulling at me. Having emigrated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo when he was 8, Miloe is constantly incorporating musical elements from the DRC, drawing inspiration from artists like Papa Wemba and Lokua Kanza. PawPaw Rod’s entrance on “rewind” delivers a nice switch-up on perspective, focusing on the possibilities of the future and feeling secure in yourself with the lyrics: “I know you went through some things, ready for your testimony. Minnesota magic tank, tell me what you got for me” Originally from Oklahoma, PawPaw Rod has been dominating the underground music scene in LA for the past 4 years or so, known for his profound creativity, bending genres for fun while still maintaining a cohesive, signature sound that blends hip-hop with 60’s soul and Californian coastal vibes.
“rewind” by Miloe and PawPaw Rod is a song about reminiscing, but also about knowing when to stop looking back and when to start looking forward. These two artists are key players in the next wave of this generation’s greatest musicians, and it’s always extra special when artists combine their strengths. Make sure you listen to “rewind” for yourself, and check out the accompanying music video as well.
