“Leak”, written by mynameisntjmack and prodcued by gutty, john wehmeyer, Zach Niess, and lim0, is another drop in the golden bucket for the quickly rising star. If you’re someone (like me) who spends their time scouting the most innovative, refreshing, and genuinely next-level independent artists, you’ve definitely already heard of mynameisntjmack. He’s been at the forefront of the underground hiphop scene for some time now, always impressing with his articulately honest flows and creative poise. He is truly groundbreaking, and we’re very stoked to highlight this incredible artist during his ascension.

The production of “Leak” is beautiful. The song is split into two different parts, however, both sections are similar in the sense that the production is built off of chilled, dreamike soundscapes that feature theatric and melodic samples of various instruments. The whole track has an air of grandeur and nostalgia, mynameisntjmack creates a sonically rich canvas onto which he lays his introspection atop. Part 1 focuses on the grind and grit of being an artist, exploring his own substance abuse and disuse, as well the negatives of success, shown in lyrics like “Money probably fucked up my relations / Money probably fucking with the music”. Part 2 of "Leak" feels more romantic and tender, delightful string and saxophone samples tantalize the listener while mynameisntjmack goes deeper into his truth. "Making demos by the day to keep my demons silenced / Stay inside my place I might just take a pill to ease the milage", mynameisntjmack is known for his beautiful delivery even whilst rapping on the more difficult aspects of life.

Pookie got to ask mynameisntjmack some questions about "Leak" and what went into creating this track, read this interaction below:

POOKIE: Can you share how you came up with the name “leak” for the track?

mynameisntjmack: I love this question because most of the time, I try to refrain from constricting myself to naming tracks after “what they’re about”, so to speak. This joint was initially two separate songs, without concrete names for either. One we just labeled as “fuckmethispanfluteiscrazy” after a 12 hour long session with my friends Gutty and John in Manhattan. Fun fact, I don’t even think that’s a panflute. The other I labeled as “ADEMOADAYKEEPSTHEDEMONSAWAY” because I was at a point in my life where I was just drinking all day and tryna record at least one track just to keep shit straight. All of that to say, once the song came together, it grew more and more important to me, and I figured what’s more important than a Beyoncé leak. So we called it that; “Beyoncé Leak”. It remained that way for about 4-5 months until we uploaded the track and were essentially told there wasn’t a single chance we could upload a song with Beyoncé’s name in the title. So we settled on “leak”. My high ass posted the wrong cover wit the original name the other day.

POOKIE: What was the creative process for making this record?

mynameisntjmack: This is another question I love because I think the answer gives insight into why the song sounds the way it does. The first part of the song was recorded in New York during a session where, admittedly, I was going through the manic high of feeling whatever successful is, as an artist; for the first time. It was one of the first occasions where I really had talented producers ask to come to me and work during sessions specifically for me. So the first half is meant to be more “in your face” “confident” because that’s how I felt at the time. The second half was recorded during a really low point where I felt stagnant with the music living in Virginia, and that’s how you get such a wordy ass, sad song out of me hahaha. the song sounds the way it does because all of the producers and I got together in LA for a session months later and added final production touches/ decided to merge the two tracks. Ultimately I feel as if “leak” tells the story of me traveling around and feeling the manic highs and lows that come with this shit.

POOKIE: What’s the inspiration/meaning behind “leak”?

mynameisntjmack: Really I think this song is a reflection of the ups and downs that I’ve been feeling over the past year traveling and making music while also tryna live life and grow as a person. Quitting xanax on and off has been an experience, and I feel like this joint is half dismissal and half apology to the relationships and people that I feel like I’ve failed.

POOKIE: The production of this track is so classic and comfortable. Where do you go when you want to relax?

mynameisntjmack: the movies, my pops and I spent the most time there when I was a kid so it means alot to me. I like to go and see all kinds of movies both good and bad just because I love the theaters. I apologize to anybody who has seen me put butter on my popcorn at an AMC
