Boy oh boy, am I excited for this one. Two of my absolute favorite artists, Paris Texas and Cryogeyser, have blended their talents with the release of "cyanide". Rough, youthful, and infectious, this experimental track (and the music video) will be the most unique piece of art you've consumed this week.
"She tastes like cyanide, I think she's dead inside". These are the lyrics that open "cyanide", today's freshly released single from two of LA's greatest underground legends, Paris Texas and cryogeyser. Rowdy with an energy of disappointment, this track depicts the struggle of forming a connection with someone who doesn't seem to be capable of having deeper emotions. Despite all the determination and effort, there is a feeling of dissatisfaction and indifference that lingers. The production utilizes high-powered, garage drums paired with gritty, distorted electric guitar chords. Paris Texas's strong, full bodied voice mixes with the high-pitched shouts and soothing reverb-flooded backing vocals of cryogeyser, which brings a slice of softness to the busy, frustrated feel of the production.
I first heard of Paris Texas about a year and a half ago. I was living in LA and still going to music school when one of my classmates showed me a song called "SITUATIONS" from an interesting duo with an interesting name. Upon listening to their rough, angsty works, I developed a strong appreciation for their experimental production style and bold, thought provoking visual aesthetic. Having met as young men during their days of academia in South Central, members Louie Pastel and Felix are the perfect partnership. After years of being friends & always being booked together, they realized they had a lot more in common than they thought, and formed Paris Texas. And we're so glad they did. With 18 million streams and 350,000 monthly listeners, I think it's safe to say it was a good call.
Cryogeyser was introduced to me by a very good friend of mine, whose taste in music I have complete trust in. Also being my first intro to shoegaze, this band opened doors for me. "LEACH" was on repeat for weeks, bringing traumas I didn't even know I had to the surface as I attempted to reach the incredible heights of Shawn Marom's vocal. The Los Angeles based trio, consisting of Shawn Marom on guitar and vocals, bassist Hunter Martinez and McCoy Kirgo on drums, is purely amazing. Their tracks are bathed in distortion and reverbs, wrapping the listener in a cocoon of acoustic guitars, naturalistic drums, and Shawn's piercing, swaddling voice.
"cyanide" from Paris Texas and cryogeyser has proved to be a perfect meshing between two of Los Angeles's most burgeoning artists. References to narcotics and religion, along with a visually provocative music video, this track wonderfully mixes the worlds of angsty, garage rap with the soulgrabbing softness of shoegaze.
