Trophy Wife Asks The Hardest Question

Updated: Oct 11

Brooklyn based alt. indie rock band Trophy Wife has released "Keep It", the first single since their 2022 EP Voyeur. Listen here.

“Do you want someone else?” One of the most painful questions one can ask, Brooklyn-based trio Trophy Wife gets blunt and blatant in their latest single “Keep It”, a heart-rending alt. rock song with a distinctly uninhibited twang that was officially released at the stroke of midnight. Buckle up.

Trophy Wife is the beautifully gutting creation of 23-year-old McKenzie Iazzetta. With this persona, she wields the gnawing sentiments of her own angst and persisting hope, presenting a striking duality that is a constant in the substance of her musical works. Armed with a siren-like vocal and supremely facetious lyrical ability, Iazzetta’s spirit pierces through the listener effortlessly, filling our ears and minds with her innermost dogfight. “Keep It” is no exception. Malaise and stark angst brim to the top before overflowing in this track, a constant escalation of cantankerous percussion and jarring guitar parts ushers in complete furor in the form of Trophy Wife’s free-falling psyche.

“Do you want someone else?”, McKenzie repeats the question of the hour throughout the record. Summoning her own trepidation, Trophy Wife basks in her own turmoil as if it was a Casper Mattress. Speaking on the inspiration for the track, Iazzetta reveals, “I wrote ‘Keep It’ after what felt like 10 cartoon anvils were dropped on my head following my move to Brooklyn at the end of 2022. I wanted to package up the feeling of clenching a fist full of sand, only to have it slip through your fingers.”

Originally from Newtown, Connecticut, McKenzie spent her formative years indulged in any corner of music that existed in her hometown, primarily the musical theater and choir programs at her high school. From here she embarked for Boston to study at Berklee College of Music, where she met her bandmates Christian Pace (bass) and Michael Martelli (drums). Together, they have entrenched themselves into New York City’s up-and-coming indie rock sphere. And tonight of all nights, Trophy Wife is set to take the stage tonight at Rubulad in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Be there or be painfully square, and witness in-person the poignant artistry of Trophy Wife. The first official performance of “Keep It” since its release will take place a handful of hours, better know the lyrics.
